Hello, I’m Rhia :)
I’m an award-winning equestrian artist based in South Wales, specializing in highly realistic horse and animal portraits created with coloured pencils.
My work is rooted in a lifelong love for animals, especially horses. I’ve always been drawn to the quiet details that make each one unique: the softness in their eye, the movement of the mane, the shine of the coat, and the character that comes through in the smallest expressions.
Over the years, I’ve created private commissions for horse and pet owners around the world, along with original artwork, fine art prints, tutorials, and equestrian-inspired collections. My work has also been recognized through awards in the equestrian art world, something I’m incredibly grateful for.
But for me, a portrait has never been only about technical accuracy. It’s about capturing likeness, personality, softness, and spirit in a way that feels meaningful to the person who loves that animal.
In this course, I’ll guide you through my complete coloured pencil process for creating realistic horse portraits, from choosing your materials and understanding your reference, to layering, blending, building fur texture, drawing expressive features, and completing a full horse head and neck portrait.
My hope is to help you draw horses with more confidence, patience, care, and connection, one thoughtful layer at a time.
I created this course because horses have always been at the heart of my art. There is something incredibly special about capturing their strength, softness, expression, and spirit on paper.
After years of creating realistic equine portraits, I wanted to share the process that helped me grow, not just the techniques, but the patience, observation, and practice behind each piece. My hope is to help other horse lovers and artists feel more confident drawing the animals they admire so deeply.
