Rhia is so talented and her work is beautiful. The detail is amazing. I’m over the moon with all of the care from Rhia, and it looks so real I can almost stroke him.

When I first started drawing horses, my work looked very different from what it does today. The progress you see wasn’t magic, and it wasn’t instant. It came from patience, discipline, practice, and the willingness to keep trying my best.
Realistic drawing is a skill you can build, one layer and one detail at a time.
In this course, I’ll guide you through the same coloured pencil process that helped me grow, from your first layers to a finished equine portrait you can feel proud of.
Do you feel inspired by the majesty, grace, and spirit of horses, but feel unsure how to capture them on paper?
Maybe you love coloured pencils, but don’t know where to begin. Maybe you’ve looked at realistic horse portraits and thought, “I could never do that.”
But realistic drawing is not magic. It is a skill built through observation, patience, discipline, and practice.
In this course, I’ll guide you step by step through the essentials of realistic equine portraiture, from noticing subtle details and understanding structure, to creating soft fur textures, expressive features, and rich layers of colour.
You don’t need to be perfect to start. You just need the willingness to learn, keep practicing, and give your best to each layer.
I’m an award-winning equestrian artist based in South Wales, specializing in highly realistic horse and animal portraits created with coloured pencils.
My work is rooted in a lifelong love for animals, especially horses. I’ve always been drawn to the quiet details that make each one unique: the softness in their eye, the movement of the mane, the shine of the coat, and the character that comes through in the smallest expressions.
Over the years, I’ve created private commissions for horse and pet owners around the world, along with original artwork, fine art prints, tutorials, and equestrian-inspired collections. My work has also been recognized through awards in the equestrian art world, something I’m incredibly grateful for.
But for me, a portrait has never been only about technical accuracy. It’s about capturing likeness, personality, softness, and spirit in a way that feels meaningful to the person who loves that animal.
In this course, I’ll guide you through my complete coloured pencil process for creating realistic horse portraits, from choosing your materials and understanding your reference, to layering, blending, building fur texture, drawing expressive features, and completing a full horse head and neck portrait.
My hope is to help you draw horses with more confidence, patience, care, and connection, one thoughtful layer at a time.

Rhia did a stunning portrait of my old mare and captured her perfectly. The colours, kind eye, and little details on her muzzle were my favourite features.
